Abschied von Frankreich
Farewell to France

Gedichte der Königin Maria Stuart Poems of Queen Mary Stuart

Mary Stuart

I am leaving – leaving !
Farewell, my France of joyous ways
Where I was so at home,
Who nurtured all my childhood days.
Farewell, the land, the happy times,
This boat takes me to foreign climes,

Yet carries but a half of me;
One part forever stays with thee,
My joyful land, to say,
Remember her who went away.
Adieu.

Lord Jesus whom they crowned with thorn,
Protect this baby, newly born.
And if it be Thy will, so may
His line long in this realm hold sway,
And all that’s done in his name, again
Be to Thy glory, honour, praise. Amen.

Gedichte der Königin Maria Stuart Poems of Queen Mary Stuart

Mary Stuart

A single thought, joyful, troubling,
Has long possessed my mind,
So fear and hope give voice
As the restless hours unwind.

Now, this paper, my heart’s chosen envoy
My deep desire for a meeting to evince,
Does, dear Sister, make me fearful once again,
For it lacks the power to convince.

All but hidden in the harbour, lies a boat
Locked down by storm and battling waves,
The heavens’ happy aspect grizzled by the night.

Buffeted by care and fear, that is my plight.
Not through you, Sister –
It is how fate behaves,
Reducing oft our trusted sail to shreds.

Abschied von der Welt
Farewell to the World

Gedichte der Königin Maria Stuart Poems of Queen Mary Stuart

Mary Stuart

What use is this allotted time?
Earthly desire has died a lingering death,
Torment remains as long as I draw breath.
My only hope, the joy to hear my death-knell chime.

Cease, enemies, your envy of me!
My wish for noble honours is past.
Now, excessive agony consumes me;
Discord goes with me to the grave at last.

Friends, who think of me with love,
Without fortune, without power, now believe
There is no good I could achieve.

Do not then wish a return to happier days,
But, being punished sorely here on earth,
Pray that a share of peace eternal is my worth.

Gebet
Prayer

Gedichte der Königin Maria Stuart Poems of Queen Mary Stuart

Mary Stuart

Lord, my God, I trust in Thee,
Oh, beloved Jesus, my Saviour be.
From these dire prison walls, my desperate calls
Express my longing for Thee.
My most fervent prayer, from the depths of despair:
Hear me, be near me, my Saviour be.
